Frequently asked questions

At Nixon Wrinkle Ranch, our journey began over 30 years ago, with a deep passion for the Chinese Shar-Pei breed. As a home-based breeder in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, we pride ourselves on personal attention and dedication to every detail. Our approach is rooted in quality and integrity, ensuring that everything we do reflects our commitment to excellence and the well-being of our puppies. We are passionate preservationists of exceptional quality, wonderfully tempered, and healthy Shar-Pei.

What are the top questions people always ask about your puppies or breeding process?

People often ask if it's true that you need to wash between every wrinkle every day. They also inquire about the colours Shar-Pei come in, why they don't see them often in their community, and what Chinese Shar-Pei were originally bred for.

Is it true that you need to wash between every wrinkle every day?

This is a common misconception! While Shar-Pei do require regular grooming and attention to their wrinkles, daily washing between every wrinkle is generally not necessary and can even irritate their skin. We provide detailed guidance on proper wrinkle care to all our puppy families. Honestly, just feed a good dog food. Kibble, Raw, etc, each dog may have a favorite and their skin may react differently to different things in the food. If you start with good nutrition your dog will be healthier and happier. At Nixon Wrinkle Ranch your puppy will go home on Royal Canin or Purina Pro Plan, those are our main go to's for food. However if you plan to feed Raw, we can definetly get your puppy started with that to ease the transition home. Let's Talk.....

What colours do Shar-Pei come in?

Shar-Pei come in a variety of beautiful solid colours, including fawn, red, red fawn, apricot, black, chocolate, cream, blue and more. Each colour can have variations in shading. We're happy to discuss the specific colours in our current or upcoming litters.

Why don't I see Shar-Pei around in my community?

Shar-Pei are a unique and distinctive breed, but they are not as common as some other breeds. They are often sought after by enthusiasts who appreciate their unique appearance and loyal temperament. Our commitment to purposeful and selective breeding means we focus on quality over quantity.

At Nixon Wrinkle Ranch we only have 1-2 litters per year.

Key points about the Shar-Pei's near extinction and survival:

  • Near Extinction: In the 1940s, high dog taxes in China made them a luxury, and they were officially deemed the world's rarest breed by the Guinness Book of World Records in the 1960s/70s.
  • The Rescue: Hong Kong breeder Matgo Law petitioned for help, and US enthusiasts imported a small number of dogs.
  • The LIFE Magazine Boost: A LIFE magazine cover in 1979 caused a surge in popularity in the USA, rescuing the breed.
  • Evolution of the Breed: To save the breed, it was crossed with other dogs, creating the "meat-mouth" (most common) and "bone-mouth" (traditional) varieties.Wikipedia +3

Today, the breed is not considered extinct, though their numbers remain low compared to more popular breeds. The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America helped standardize and protect the breed, which was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1992.Los Angeles Times +2

What were Chinese Shar-Pei originally bred for?

Chinese Shar-Pei were originally bred in China as all-purpose farm dogs, used for hunting, guarding, and herding. Their distinctive loose skin and wrinkled appearance were believed to protect them during fights with wild animals.

What makes your puppies and your breeding program special compared to others?

Our puppies are raised in our home with consistent care and the Puppy Culture Program. This ensures they receive early neurological stimulation and socialization, fostering sound temperaments. We also offer ongoing support and communication to all our puppy families, and we are proud members in good standing with the Canadian Kennel Club, The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of Canada, and Grey Bruce Kennel & Obedience Club.

What key information do you want potential puppy buyers to know right away?

We are not like other breeders. We show our dogs because it is a way to ensure that our dogs are physically to the standards of the breed. we build relationships with our puppy homes. We welcome updates, questions, concerns, ongoing- it does not stop when you leave with your puppy. We will always be here.

We do not breed a litter until we know we have approved homes for the puppies. We want people to have knowledge about the breed, beyond just 'they are cute' puppies. Potential owners need to understand the typical Shar-Pei breed's temperaments, health concerns, and activity level. We encourage thorough research before considering a Shar-Pei from us.

Do you health test your breeding dogs?

Yes, absolutely! We are dedicated participants in OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) health testing for our breeding dogs. We also do SPAID and POAG-PLL testing. (Please ask us to see our certificates for this). This ensures we are only breeding from healthy lines. Our transparency in health testing is a cornerstone of our breeding program.
